Roboto Font is a sans-serif typeface family developed by Google as the system font for its Android operating system. Google describes the font as “modern, yet approachable” and “emotional”. The font is licensed under the Apache license.
Roboto has a dual nature. It has a mechanical skeleton and the forms are largely geometric. At the same time, the font features friendly and open curves. While some grotesques distort their letterforms to force a rigid rhythm, Roboto doesn’t compromise, allowing letters to be settled into their natural width. This makes for a more natural reading rhythm more commonly found in humanist and serif types.
The family includes regular and oblique styles of Thin, Light, Regular, Medium, Bold, Black, and Condensed widths.
Roboto Font is not only the default font of the Android operating system but also the default font of other Google services such as Google+, Google Play, YouTube, Google Maps and Google Search mobile versions, since the year 2013 until now.
